Whether it’s an everyday sterling bangle or an old-school copper costume ring, every piece of jewelry gets dirty over time. Oil and dander from your skin, dust, soap residue and build up from lotions can leave a dull finish on your baubles, which is why a jewel cleaner is essential for keeping your jewelry in sparkling shape. Fortunately, cleaning jewelry isn’t as complicated or expensive as it may seem.

For example, a simple solution of warm water and mild detergent is ideal for most jewelry, including gold, silver and precious gemstones. Simply mix a small amount of cleaner with warm water and soak your jewelry for a few minutes to remove built-up grime and dirt. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. This method works especially well for delicate earrings and rings.

If your jewelry has more pronounced dirt or tarnish, try a liquid or cream jewelry cleaner. Liquid cleaners typically come with a tray for holding your jewelry and a small brush to reach in between the nooks and crannies. These jewelry cleaners can also be more affordable than professional jewelry cleaners, but it’s always best to follow the instructions that came with your specific product.

There are other steps you can take to keep your jewelry clean and lustrous, such as removing rings when applying cosmetics or washing dishes, taking off pearls before swimming or showering, and wiping down all jewelry regularly with a soft cloth to remove excess oils, perfumes and body lotions. It’s also a good idea to store your jewelry in an anti-tarnish pouch or a soft piece of cloth when not wearing it.
